Lauren  Townshend

We were at Willows Inn in WA last night and tried your Blaufrankisch. It is divine! Can you tell me if it is available right now? best regards, Lauren Townshend - Lauren, we are sold out of the 2011, but the 2012 will be bottled in March and released in the summer/early fall (2014). Best, Dag

Your 2007 Pinot Noir, Nils Reserve, was paired with roast duck breast, as part of a series of plates I enjoyed at Serratto in Portland last night. I would love to do this again, but alas I was a guest and until an anonymous wealthy relative; perhaps in Norway; passes on their wealth to me I doubt it will very soon!

Just opened 2006 Pinot and it was fabulous! Do you happen to have any more stashed? - Gail, give us a call, we have a few cases in library. Best, Dag

Beau  Carufel

I visited Johan with a couple of friends, one of which was a wine club member and always spoke highly of the wine. I left with multiple bottles and a club membership. Johan was my first wine club membership ever.

The  McClungs

We took a few bottles of Pinot Noir to our friends in South Africa. Needless to say they are not happy with us for introducing them to a great wine that they cannot get. I guess they will have to visit us soon.

Chardonnay - Visdom

The Visdom bottling is a study of secondary and tertiary aromatic development in Chardonnay. We like to think of this wine as something that resembles flat Champagne. With extended aging prior to bottling we see a decline in fruit and an increase in vineyard expression. After 18 months of barrique aging the wine is bottled with a small amount of lees to allow the wine to stay in contact with the yeast taking advantage of the complexities that develop with late stage yeast autolysis.

Pinot Gris - Drueskall

The Drueskall is an Orange wine made from the Pinot Gris grape. Our goal is to craft a wine that has the structure of a red wine combined with a full range of tertiary white wine aromas. We continue to refine the vinification of this wine, incorporating both concrete and oak vessels, with the duration of skin contact ranging from 10 to 30 days. The pressed wine then ages for 15 months in the absence of sulfur to encourage its wild nature. Bottling is done by hand without fining or filtration.

Pinot Gris - Willamette Valley

The goal with our Pinot Gris is to retain the youth of the wine producing something very fresh and expressive of the grapes varietal character. Fermentation temperatures occur at 10F higher than the rest of our whites to subdue tropical fruit aromas and encourage expression of minerality. Fermentation and aging occurs in old oak barriques for 7 months. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to retain the highest level of acidity possible.

Pinot Noir - Estate

The goal behind the Estate bottling is to make a wine that is representative of the whole farm. If we were to harvest all of our Pinot Noir grapes and make one wine this is the wine it would be. We achieve this on a micro scale by selecting small parcels of fruit from every combination of rootstock/scion, slope, soil profile, and vine age on the property. We then vinify, age, and bottle this wine separately from our other lots. This bottling is always the most representative of the growing year. It incorporates every element of the farm for better or worse. It is the most accurate representation of Johan Vineyards’ terroir.

Pinot Noir - Nils

The Nils bottling was created out of an interest to capture a specific expression from our estate fruit. With the Nils we seek power through weight and extract. This is where our personal preferences begin to merge with the terroir of the vineyard. Our highest pitched East-facing slope produces the most concentrated fruit on the property. We select the best rows at the peak of this slope to produce this wine. This slope provides the dark fruit and earthy base notes of the Nils bottling. The extract and concentrated tannin profile of this fruit provides a wealth of antioxidants that preserve this wine for long term aging.

Pinot Noir - Three Barrel

The Three barrel bottling is the result of an annual barrel selection process. The blend is comprised of our three most alluring and exotic barrels from the vintage. Every year we end up with a few barrels that express particular aroma and flavor characteristics that are beyond our comprehension. These barrels are in perfect harmony with their time and place resulting in something complete and truly compelling. The goal with Three Barrel is to maximize aromatic complexity and perfume. A firm acid structure replaces tannic extract to preserve this wine for long term aging.
